Java Topples C in Language Popularity Index

Warning: This post can hit C folks like a TON of BRICKS!

But, don’t worry! It’s a cat and a mouse chase in the programming world, especially when it comes to Object Oriented Programming (OOP) Java and C language w.r.t *Tiobe’s index.

History Repeats!

Back in 2013, Java made headlines by moving past C to lead the Tiobe’s index. It repeated this feat after more than one and a half years recently, thanks to Android!!

The Tiobe index is updated monthly and since April 2015 till end August, Java has been enjoying the top spot. Java is also steadily widening the gap with the number two contender C on a month-on-month basis. Now, it is almost 4.5% ahead of C which is at 14.7%.

The top position was held by C for a long-time (for nearly two years) until recently challenged by Java. Experts like Paull Krill favor the growing popularity of Android as one of the reasons for its resurrection.  However, the, fact is, the revamped new avatar of Java 8 which was released with expressive features and functionalities in 2014 cannot be ignored.

So, who’s behind Java’s popularity?

Android’s Growing Adoption

Android accounted for about 83% of smartphones sold in the second quarter of 2015, according to IDC. From Kitkat in 2013 to Jellybean and Marshmallow, Android is racing ahead.  However, barely 18% of current Android devices are using the most current version of the software, launched in 2014. Nearly three-quarters of Android’s user base are still on the KitKat and Jelly Bean versions launched two and three years ago, respectively. What does this signal?.. #goodnews

Future

#goodnews.. As the three-quarter users upgrade to a newer version, Java’s popularity is set to remain steadily on top for some more time, until C does some magic.

  • Tiobe –A company based in Netherland specializes in assessing and tracking software’s quality across the globe. Its programming community index is compiled based on a formula that factors into 25 search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Amazon, Wikipedia, Baidu etc.  to calculate its ranking. Read more about Tiobe

Note: The Tiobe’s ranking doesn’t reflect which is the best programming language or the language in which most numbers of codes were written. But, it is based on skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors.

4 Solid Reasons, Why you should choose Office 365 over Google apps

A recent report released by OKTA, indicates that Office 365 ruled the Cloud roosts by being the most widely used cloud service by enterprises both big and small. OKTA, a San Francisco company,  builds identity management products.  It has an active customer base of 2500 customers from small to large companies.

The same report observed Google Apps for work at 4th place. This does not come as a surprise. Though, Office 365 and Google apps For Work provide similar services, there are four key areas where Office 365 gives Google Apps a run for their money.

To begin with, Office 365 takes a holistic approach to business productivity as compared to Google which has a narrower focus.in that it does not provision solutions to manage all workloads. Secondly, Office 365 allows enterprises with commercial grade reliability and the flexibility to innovate at workplace and provides complete support as compared to Google Apps For Work, which provides limited support.

Summarizing the difference, Microsoft emphasizes the ways in which it is different and better when compared with Google Apps For Work.

Office 365 allows enterprises to innovate

Office 365 delivers complete set of capabilities to innovate. This allows enterprises to build solutions to meet business needs, rather than building solutions on features to solve a business problem.  On the other hand, Google apps for work have limited or no provision to safeguard innovation.   Thus, Microsoft commitment to continuous innovation has helped them outpace Google at work. Recent array of innovations include Office Graph and Delve, Office for iPad & I-phone & Android, Yammer, Office sway and so forth, sets Office 365 ahead of the pack.

Office 365 has a financially backed service level

Office 365 comes with a financially-backed service level agreement that allows enterprises to feel confident while working on Cloud. On the other hand, these missing security capabilities in Google apps for work with limited support, and unclear terms put data and privacy at risk while letting suspicion seep through.

Google apps are never designed for Hybrid environment

Google offer consumer oriented productivity with limited support. Google apps were never designed for Hybrid environment which makes it difficult for enterprises to work with Google apps. On the other hand, Office 365 helps enterprises move to the cloud at your own pace with enterprise proven reliability and control.

Holistic Solution

Google apps does not support common enterprise workloads while Office 365 meets all commercial productivity demands.

Interesting times ahead for Office 365 as it is constantly easing into the cloud, allowing enterprises to choose their preferred working style, rather than abruptly shifting to a cloud-only workplace.

So, which one works for you. Have something to share on this topic ? Please feel free to write at himanshu_s@trigent.com

Why Custom Web Application Development is here to stay?

Website is an integral part of any business today. Newer ways are adopted to attract visitors, target global customers, enable multi-channel transactions, extend capabilities to mobile devices and the list continues. Moreover, the advent of CMS platforms like Drupal, Joomla, WordPress have made it easier for enterprises to build a website with a multitude of ready-to-use features.

Amidst the convenience and ready to use features modern CMS platforms have to offer, unique requirements do feature every now and then, which compel enterprises to build custom solutions around their existing operations, workflow or processes.

Dedicating a fulltime team to build custom requirements that appear for shorter duration, can result in idle hours and hence add to overheads. Instead, it is advisable to make a smart choice by engaging dedicated resources for optimal usage. One of the ways is by outsourcing the task to a custom web application Development Company. At the least, you get total satisfaction and confidence in the quality of deliverables unlike engaging fulltime resources for short duration or shared resources who would be stretched beyond work hours.

Custom web application development companies can help you benefit in more ways than one. There are many reasons for rising demands for custom web application development companies and below are the most compelling ones:

  1. Flexible Engagement and Development

Clients can work closely with dedicated resources in a flexible environment. Flexible engagement allows developers and clients to work closely and create a solution that is scalable and can be tweaked according to users or the clients’ needs. The output – a highly customized product that just works for client’s business.

  1. Solutions Built after Thorough Research:

A reputed web application development company would initially conduct a thorough research and analysis of a project before getting started with it. Business analysts and project managers conduct an extended fact finding expedition in which all client requirements, their business and the actual expectation of the software are understood. These findings are then documented and applied to create a well formulated solution which meets client’s requirements.

  1. User Friendly Applications:

Certain aspects like rendering user friendly interface requires an expert who understands the latest trends and methods. With custom web application development companies, you get to leverage the economics of their experiences drawn from diverse application development projects.

Above all, experienced web application development companies do have best practices, tried-tested and proven methodologies to help you expedite projects without reinventing the wheel. And yes, many companies such as Trigent do provide value added services such QA, maintenance and support across development lifecycle.

“G11N” Testing– A key aspect of Software Product Testing

Interview with a Testing/QA Manager at Trigent

“G11N” or Globalization testing is more relevant today than it was earlier and is a key aspect of software product testing. For one, to increase their market base, companies are increasingly targeting global customers tailoring features and functionality to meet user standards and formats of a particular geography. This includes preferences like platforms, browsers, language settings, currency, etc. Testing different combinations of the above elements become mission-critical.

Globalization testing also means ensuring software products have relevant features and functionality to establish connect with the geographically dispersed users. It would be apt to describe Globalization testing as a process to ensure the software can run independently of its geographical and cultural environment.

I asked our Associate Test Manager, “What are the key components of Globalization testing and what are the most left out aspects or minute details one has to bear in mind for globalization testing?”

Here’s what Mr. Ashwin replied:

“There are a lot of aspects that must be considered when producing a global software. Some of the aspects are as follows:

• Locale/Language/Vocabulary Sensitivity

• Format

– Date and time

– Currency handling

– Address and telephone number

• Default Size of Paper for printing

Apart from usual elements tested like platforms, cross-browser compatibility, language settings, translation capabilities, etc.”

I asked how was he able to minutely define such details which are often missed out in Globalization testing. He replied –

“One gets to know about various nuances of Globalization testing or for that matter another testing when one works for a particular case and the level he drills into. In our case, we had a chance to perform globalization testing for a web-based product involved in an online transaction using 25 different currencies. Also, product testing was done to ensure that mobile users in 70 countries can recharge their currency and perform money transfer without any problem across countries.”

Mr. Ashwin also suggested some of the best practices while performing Globalization Testing as follows:

Step1: Analyze the globalization requirements in detail like the culture, standards etc.

Step 2: Ensure application seamlessly integrates with the locale/language

Step 3: Ensure application and database are able to capture and store all special characters, italics, accentuated character sets specific to the language to be supported

Step 4: Ensure there is proper formatting of dates, currencies etc. as applicable

Step 5: Ensure proper conversion rates as applicable in case of currencies

Globalization testing aims to make sure acceptability, usability and reliability of a product are intact in keeping with global audiences in mind. As a service provider, more and more software testing companies are gearing to strengthen their support to meet global user experience.

I had an insightful session with Mr. Ashwin yesterday. If you have any queries or if you want to know more about how our software product testing services can help you, don’t hesitate to call us or drop a line.

The Rise of Custom Software Development Services

“Change” is probably the only constant entity that is more relevant in today’s business world. All the models, processes, concepts and approaches to run a business have witnessed a sea change in the past few decades. These changes have raised new bars for growth drivers. One of the key drivers of today’s businesses is Information Technology and the way in which Information Technology is advancing is quite commendable. However, as businesses are improving upon their processes and workflows, the standard IT solutions are incapable to meet unique business needs. For instance, the same solution cannot be applied repeatedly to different businesses as their needs may vary and continuously evolve. Even a small organization may need various custom solutions well integrated with their LOB applications to complement in-house processes and workflows. This variability has enterprises especially start-ups, turn to custom software development services providers.

The rise in the demand for custom software development services can be attributed to factors like optimized built, optimized investment and customer features which are specific to a business need. Primarily due to its nature and inherent flexibility, custom software development services offer more benefits than one.

1.Optimize Investment:As custom developed software applications are meant to serve specific business purpose, they allow organizations to optimize investments by eliminating extra features and functionality of a standard software.

2.Skilled Professionals: Since, you would be approaching a custom software development services providers, whose selling proposition is to provide superior services, you can rest assured that you will get to leverage skilled professionals, domain expertise etc. to solve your business problems.

3.Cost-Effectiveness: Selecting a software development company is a cost-effective solution as it not only save money on training in-house employees but also allows to cut cost on buying a full-fledged software and other licenses. Most company prefer to outsource custom software development services to developing countries like India and China. The primary benefit they get is the labor arbitrage for development and support cost.

4.Latest Technology: One of the value propositions customer software development service providers is being adept at latest technology, tools and framework. Custom software development services companies have comprehensive partner network and expertise across tools and technologies.

However, choosing the right custom development company as a partner is crucial. Due diligence must be exercised to select the best vendor. We have a handy guide that can help your select the best partner.

5 Pervasive Challenges of Agile Testing

As Agile development methods enter mainstream, agile testing has become imperative to complete the software development life cycle. Our test automation partner – Borland outlines 5 challenges to agile testing and our views as follows:

  1. Difficult to keep everyone on the same page

One of the important aspects of agile methodology or development is tying in different teams in a collaborative environment. As development iteration increase, it is important to keep all stakeholders notified on the changes. They also need to quickly see who is doing what, at a given moment, and what is being tested.

  1. Test Driven Development can be unpopular

Development teams like the flexibility to code that works for them and the software they use. Using test development approach restricts their creative freedom and drives focus more on specifications and test cases.

  1.  Lack of clarity around the role of tester

Following a test driven approach where a developer writes the Test cases can be counter productive, thus raises the question whether to have dedicated team of testers. In which case, defining their roles can be quite cumbersome.

  1. Unit testing alone is not adequate

Testing agile projects are often iterative. Also, the proverbial “test early and often” demarcates the importance of unit testing.

  1. Agile project cycles requires multiple test cycles

Unlike a tradition development model where there’s only one phase, agile testing requires several iterative attempts. Which means incurring overheads on several grounds.

We have worked on several testing projects in an agile setting and we found these challenges pervasive. However, our mature practices are designed to address these issues. If you are facing similar challenges with Agile Product Testing, contact us today.

3 SEO Overhauls in a SharePoint 2013 Public Facing Website

Until recently, SharePoint was widely adopted as a platform of choice for managing internal workload. Enterprises leveraged its capabilities for building intranets, search capabilities and managing records and so forth. It was with the launch of SharePoint 2007 that it started expanding its capabilities with the launch of BI and Social features.

Now, with the introduction ofSharePoint Server 2013 Internet Facing Website Model,it has developed advanced WCM capabilities and is constantly building up on WCM fora.  Among the many advanced WCM capabilities of this model, here are some features that can give you easy SEO wins.

1.   Automatic Canonical URL Generation

Canonical URLs are one of the trusted ways to help search engines uniquely identify the content of a page. It helps eliminate duplication of search engine indexes. For example, a product page for a UPS can have dynamic URLs (owing to certain sources like domains, subdomains, blogs and syndication sites, etc.)As below:

http://www.example.com/products?category=UPS&backup=30minutes

http://example.com/volt/Power?color=blackABCD

http://www.example.com/products/UPS/500MV/30minutes.html

Having a web-page indexed and registered like the above URLs not only divides the search results’ ranking of the UPS product page, but it also runs the risk of being penalized on the account of content duplication.

To keep the search engines happy you need to ensure that there’s only one URL to identify a particular webpage. Let us take some of the guidelines from Google to understand the importance of canonical URLs.

According to the Google webmaster’s SEO guidelines, the best way to eliminate these duplicates is to indicate the preferred URL with the rel=”canonical” link element. However, manually adding this link element for each URL can be time-consuming and intricate. This is where SharePoint’s SEO properties help.

SharePoint server 2013 can automatically generate the canonical URL for your webpages. All you need to do is Activate “Search Engine Optimization Site Collection Feature”. You can then set up the query strings parameters on Search Engine Optimization Settings page to automatically render the meta tag rel=”canonical” in the HTML. You can verify this by viewing your source codes.

 2. Automatic XML Sitemap Generation

During the crawl process, it becomes increasingly difficult for search engines to identify your webpages that have Ajax elements, rich images or are poorly linked with each other. The best way to notify search engines is to use XML Sitemap. An XML Sitemap is a protocol that notify search engines about website’s URL that is available for crawling. Search engines like Google rely on XML Sitemaps to discover content on your website or to check periodic updates that need to be indexed.

It becomes increasingly difficult to create XML Sitemap manually and ping search engines regularly for periodic content updates.  SharePoint 2013 server helps automatically generate XML Sitemap daily for you and also ensure that the XML is up-to-date.

You can access this feature by activating Search Engine Sitemap Site Collection Feature. You can also use Search Engine Sitemap job timer to schedule your crawls and informs search engines of possible updates regularly.

3. Term Store to create Search Engine-Friendly URLs

Search engines value a webpage’s URL structure while ranking them in SERPs. The new SharePoint model allows us to have a greater control on URL structure and is also future proof for SEO.

The new Term Store in the managed Meta-data model is an important feature in both SharePoint 2013 and office 365. It allows us to create intuitive URLs instead of Database driven URLs and helps us to structure navigation hierarchy through taxonomy terms. This ensures that the URLs are intuitive and as well as search engine friendly.

The new SharePoint licensing model makes a compelling case to build a website on top of SharePoint from financial point of view. Trigent’s consulting offerings are designed to get you the best out of your SharePoint investment. Drop us a line at sales@trigent.com

Customer Portal improves operational efficiency & customer loyalty

Since its introduction in early 2000, Enterprise Portal technology has seen its fair share of transition. A technology, which was first conceptualized to form the face of web went through several iterations & enhancements to come to the enterprise foray.

Use of portal for internal intranet, knowledge sharing and collaboration needs is a norm in today’s day and age. The focus has now shifted to extranet, outward facing customer, vendor & partner portals.

Speaking of portals, in its early days customer portals were used as one way broadcasting vehicles, but today they are perceived as solutions that bring customers closer to organizations internal processes. Customer portal driven initiatives show immediate revenue and cost benefits as they improve customer engagement, reduce CRM dependency, generate new revenue stream and improve operational efficiency.

Customer Portals can cater to various needs ranging from transactional data management, eCommerce, information sharing, customer servicing and relationship management. The benefits are relative but one thing is certain, it helps create customer confidence, convenience & loyalty.

Three types of SharePoint customers, which type are you?

Microsoft’s most revered collaboration platform, SharePoint boasts of more than 125 million users, and its user base is still expanding. Ironically, very few of these customers truly realize its full potential. During our customer engagements, we frequently come across many qualms that decision makers have regarding SharePoint.

Most of them cite concerns like – “I already have SharePoint, why do I need you”? or “I have already implemented SharePoint, how do we proceed now”? Or more frequently – “I don’t have any SharePoint requirements”.

Most customers use SharePoint for a very specific business need and rarely go beyond the stereotype. Microsoft’s flagship enterprise platform is powerful enough to address most critical business problems spread across departments & businesses.

This article intends to highlight the different types of SharePoint customers and their maturity in adopting the platform.

Type 1: Point Solution

Organizations that figure in this phase are those who perceive SharePoint from a specific business function or immediate business need such as Sites and Communities for internal collaboration. The focus is on solving specific business challenges at hand.

Type 2: Departmental Solution

Climbing up the maturity ladder, organizations in this phase are those who are familiar with SharePoint but and maximize its usage for specific business department. The common perception organizations hold is that SharePoint is well suited for specific business functions such as Document Management, Workflow & Team collaboration. These customers make the most of those specific functions for business use.

Type 3: Enterprise Platform

As SharePoint adoption matures, users are well versed with most of its functions and capabilities. Organizations consider SharePoint in their strategic plans and even evaluate SharePoint as an enterprise platform. For instance, every time there is a new business need, they go to the drawing board to evaluate whether SharePoint can address it. Such customers are thought leaders in their own right and make the most of what SharePoint has to offer.

Trigent’s consulting offeringsare designed to address each type of customer.

America Does “CARE” – But ACOs have Real Time IT Challenges

Hot on the heels of healthcare revolution in the U.S., the ACO model has been gathering steam lately. Dominantly ignited by factors like under-performing healthcare system and higher care cost, ACO model came as a sort of respite for the U.S. populace. According to a recent study conducted by a management consulting firm, there are about 25 to 31 million Americans who are currently receiving health care services from an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and more than 40% of Americans live in areas with at least one ACO. The numbers are rising steadily. However, there are still operational bottlenecks that are pervasive and deter caregivers to join the ACO force.

Unlike pay for services’ model, ACOs success largely hinges on optimized coordinated care ensuring 2 critical objectives are met.  #1. Shorten Decision Window for Care Co-ordination. #2. Ensuring Consistent Connection with Patients.

As the success of an ACO model relies on ensuring quality care and reducing care cost, there’s a tighter room for profit, which can only be realized if the above objectives are met. These objectives might seem mutually exclusive at first sight, but the common thread that binds their success is the Real-Time capturing, monitoring and communication of various data. Let’s see how these real-time analytics will play a mission-critical role in complementing the success of ACO model.

1. Shorten Decision Window for Care Co-ordination

Patients come with various chronic conditions. These chronic conditions cannot be standardized as there will be a huge combination of health factor that is unique to a patient. Forming a case for a patient with multiple chronic conditions will require real time coordinated efforts with other dispersed physicians and hospitals across dispersed geography. In order to shorten the decision window, capturing and communicating real-time data with dispersed hospitals like health record keeping, patient’s health indices, prescription status, prognosis alerts, time stamping, etc. are crucial. By providing a platform to communicate real-time and deadline based alerts integrated across workflow with dispersed participants, care quality can be improved upon.

2. Establishing consistent connect with Patients

For ACO model to succeed, consistent connection between patients, hospitals and physician office is paramount. This is especially relevant during an emergency situation where the patient sees out of network specialists in the absence of real-time connect and physical presence thereby increasing the cost of care.  During such a cases, real-time monitoring and prognosis of  patients can come as a savior in order to curtail care costs, managing risks and monitoring clinical data. Even inside the hospital premise collecting data about patient’s presence is critical in order to build a workflow with alerts around patient’s locomotion with respect to his stranded location, equipment availability, waiting time lapse and thereby reducing waiting time for proper care.

Balancing Act
